In a climate of DOD "re-sizing" Army women must re-explore service and civilian opportunities. Two panels of corporate and military leaders examined the significance of military service and provided a road map for Army women managing the transition between military and civilian life.
Hall of Fame Luncheon
This year’s inductees into the Army Women’s Hall of Fame include the Army Women who served in the Korean War. The award marks the 60th anniversary of the conflict. Although this conflict is often called “the forgotten war”, it marked a turning point for American Servicewomen, as they gained increasingly higher positions and served very close to the front lines – a precursor to today’s combat inclusion.
Other inductees at the event included retired General Ann Dunwoody, the Army’s first female four-star General, the first female Command Sergeant Major, Yzetta Nelson (awarded posthumously), and Sergeant Major Carolyn James (awarded posthumously), a groundbreaking Women’s Army Corp member who earned the Bronze Star. Congressman J. Randy Forbes (R-Virginia) also received a special recognition award for his support of Army Women. The Army Women’s Foundation also announced 29 Legacy Scholarships at the event that were awarded to Army Women and their children earning degrees and certifications to improve their careers.

General (Ret) Gordon R. Sullivan, President, Association of the U.S. Army, Served as 32nd Chief of Staff of the Army, speaks about the tremendous contributions women service members have made throughout history.
General (Ret) Ann E. Dunwoody, 2013 Hall of Fame Honoree, First Woman Four-Star General, speaks about receiving the honor of becoming a Four-Star General, and sharing that with other women.

2013 AWF Legacy Scholarships Announced
Twenty-nine deserving Army women and their children, selected from an applicant pool from across the country, received the Army Women’s Foundation 2013 Legacy Scholarship. College tuition is on the rise and financial resources are declining, making scholarships even more critical to students today. The Legacy Scholarships are available for tuition assistance at the community college level or four year academic institutions: Community College/Certificate Program Legacy Scholarships are awarded in amounts up to $1,000. Four Year College/University Legacy Scholarships are awarded in amounts up to $2,500. To see the winners and read more, click here!
AWF participates in Disney's Salute to Our Troops Day in Orlando, FL
The Army Women’s Foundation continued to broaden its outreach last weekend when it participated in a military appreciation event at Champion Stadium in Orlando, Florida.
At the invitation of the Walt Disney Co., the Army Women’s Foundation took part in the Salute to Our Troops day at an Atlanta Braves spring training game on March 23. Disney owns the venue and has a military veterans hiring initiative.
The Foundation was one of several military and veteran service organizations that exhibited their brochures and other material at the main entrance to the ballpark.
The venue provided another way for the Foundation to share information about its efforts to honor the service of Army women and preserve their history. Participating in the event fit with a larger strategy of getting more businesses and individuals involved in the work of the Foundation.
Numerous attendees wanted to know more about the Foundation and life in the Army. Often times, it was the parents of young women who made the inquiry.
The event took place at Champion Stadium in the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. Soldiers from U.S. Central Command volunteered to staff the Foundation’s exhibit.
Salute to Our Troops also featured a military color guard; military personnel performing the national anthem and God Bless America; a veteran throwing the first pitch; and games for families of military members and veterans.

Series Includes Army Women’s Hall of Fame Inductees—Army Women Who Served in Vietnam
During March 2012, military leaders, government officials, academics, and corporate and non-profit leaders assembled in Washington, D.C. with one question: how do we use our collective knowledge and resources to help servicewomen successfully transition back into their homes, jobs, and communities? This question was the focus of the Army Women's Foundation’s 4th Annual Army Women in Transition Symposium & Hall of Fame Luncheon.
The answers offered by these leaders are found in a podcast series and are based on their experiences, research, knowledge, lessons learned, and best practices. These podcasts of the Symposium are available for free viewing and download from podcast.awfdn.org/2012/. The podcasts provide servicewomen and veterans returning home from deployment with real advice. A list of the podcasts is below.
